99 Vinous
The 1995 Musigny Grand Cru comes from a year when Christophe Roumier could do no wrong, and it triumphs over the 11 other vintages assessed in this vertical, blessed with a sense of completeness that none of the others possess. The 1995 is slightly lighter in color than the 1999. The nose is ethereal and beautifully defined, featuring pure red and black fruit, sous-bois, nettle and briar; an underlying mineral seam blossoms with aeration. The palate is a perfect match between fruit concentration and acidity. There is a discreet crescendo in flavor, with beguiling pure red berry fruit, undergrowth, white Chinese tea and red cherry on the pixelated finish. This is a brilliant Musigny. Tasted in November 2018 at the Roumier Musigny dinner at Épure in Hong Kong.Neal Martin1st August 2019

Domaine Georges Roumier

A Icon of Fine Burgundy

One of Burgundy's most famous producers - founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, the domaine was passed to his son Jean-Marie in 1957 and eventually on to his grandson Christophe in the early 1990s. Vines are either rented from family members or managed on a share-cropping basis and the cellar team operate a dynamic approach to winemaking, subtly altering their techniques depending on the vineyard and vintage. Some fruit is fully destemmed before fermentation while some is partially destemmed. A cool maceration takes place before fermentation, which takes place in wooden vats, and punch downs happen twice a day. Use of new oak is judicious - only around 20% for the village wines, 35% for the Premier Crus and 50% for the Grand Crus.

If Georges Roumier only produced Chambolle-Musigny, Bonnes Mares and Clos St Denis, the winery would still be considered one of the greatest in Burgundy, but their other-worldly Musigny Grand Cru elevates their status among the great wineries of France to legendary.
