Mouton Rothschild 2008 is a noteworthy release from the renowned First Growth Château Mouton Rothschild. This vintage comprises 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot. On the nose, one can discern aromas of red fruits, particularly blackberry and blackcurrant, complemented by hints of floral notes, including violet. With aeration, delicate roasted characteristics and subtle cedar elements emerge. The palate presents a full-bodied structure with smooth tannins, featuring layers of black fruit alongside vanilla accents. This bottle also showcases a label designed by contemporary artist Xu Lei.

Tasted at the Mouton-Rothschild vertical in London, the 2008 Mouton Rothschild has always been in the shadow of the ensuing couple of vintages, but I was not the only person at this tasting that commented upon the class in show here. It replicated previous showings. cedar and graphite present and correct, though accompanied by something a little more exotic - eucalyptus maybe? The palate is beautifully balanced, very detailed and extremely fresh. This conveys so much energy and animation before reverting towards a more classic and structured, pencil lead finish. Those in the know will stash up on the 2008 Mouton Rothschild because it is destined to turn into one of the "dark horses" of the decade. Tasted May 2016. - Neal Martin

The 2008 Mouton Rothschild has a more open bouquet than I expected: blackberry, pencil box, a whiff of the Gironde estuary, a hint of pressed flowers with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet tannin, a little fleshier than the Château Margaux with a lovely saline finish that does not outstay its welcome. You could broach this now though personally I would prefer to wait. (Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' annual 10-Year On tasting.)Neal Martin1st February 2018

Wine as Art

The prestigious Château Mouton Rothschild estate is home to the world-renowned First Growth of the same name, in addition to a second red wine, Petit Mouton and a white wine, made in smaller quantities, known as L'Aile d'Argent. Established in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, the Château pioneered the idea of bottling their own wine in the 1920s while other properties were still selling and exporting in barrel. A Second Growth until 1972, the winery was officially elevated to the high rank of Bordeaux classification in 1973 after much campaigning by the famous Baron Philippe de Rothschild.

Cabernet Sauvignon that takes pride of place in the wines of Mouton Rothschild, with smaller percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon always predominates in the Mouton red, giving the wine its rich tannins, wealth of aroma, flavour and superb ageing capacity. Meanwhile Merlot, an inseparable companion, brings suppleness, roundness and exceptional length.
