The 2008 release from illustrious First Growth Estate Château Mouton Rothschild is composed of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot. On the nose, red fruit, blackberry and blackcurrant combine harmoniously with floral notes such as violet. On airing, roasted, toasted notes mingle graciously with delicate touches of cedarwood. Powerful and full-bodied on the palate with silky, velvety tannins, notes of black berried fruit and vanilla nuances. Featuring an iconic label design from Chinese painter, Xu Lei.

The 2008 Mouton Rothschild has a more open bouquet than I expected: blackberry, pencil box, a whiff of the Gironde estuary, a hint of pressed flowers with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet tannin, a little fleshier than the Château Margaux with a lovely saline finish that does not outstay its welcome. You could broach this now though personally I would prefer to wait. (Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' annual 10-Year On tasting.)Neal Martin1st February 2018

Wine as Art

The prestigious Château Mouton Rothschild estate is home to the world-renowned First Growth of the same name, in addition to a second red wine, Petit Mouton and a white wine, made in smaller quantities, known as L'Aile d'Argent. Established in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, the Château pioneered the idea of bottling their own wine in the 1920s while other properties were still selling and exporting in barrel. A Second Growth until 1972, the winery was officially elevated to the high rank of Bordeaux classification in 1973 after much campaigning by the famous Baron Philippe de Rothschild.

Cabernet Sauvignon that takes pride of place in the wines of Mouton Rothschild, with smaller percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon always predominates in the Mouton red, giving the wine its rich tannins, wealth of aroma, flavour and superb ageing capacity. Meanwhile Merlot, an inseparable companion, brings suppleness, roundness and exceptional length.
