Morey-St-Denis Clos de la Bussière Georges Roumier 2016 is a Premier Cru Pinot Noir from a Monopole vineyard in Burgundy. Renowned for its traditional winemaking methods, Domaine Georges Roumier has full control over this site, allowing for focused expression of terroir. The vineyard, situated in the Côte de Nuits, benefits from excellent drainage and a distinctive limestone-rich soil. This vintage reflects the character of the region with its bright ruby hue and aromas of ripe cherry, subtle earth and floral notes. The palate presents a structured form with fine tannins, showcasing the wine’s potential for ageing and complexity.

The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos de la Bussière is tightly-wound on the nose with blackberry, raspberry, hints of singed leather and spice. I appreciate the delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, a fine bead of acidity, chalky in texture with a grip and certainly impressive focus on the finish. This is an excellent Morey-Saint-Denis. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. Neal Martin1st October 2019

Domaine Georges Roumier

A Icon of Fine Burgundy

One of Burgundy's most famous producers - founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, the domaine was passed to his son Jean-Marie in 1957 and eventually on to his grandson Christophe in the early 1990s. Vines are either rented from family members or managed on a share-cropping basis and the cellar team operate a dynamic approach to winemaking, subtly altering their techniques depending on the vineyard and vintage. Some fruit is fully destemmed before fermentation while some is partially destemmed. A cool maceration takes place before fermentation, which takes place in wooden vats, and punch downs happen twice a day. Use of new oak is judicious - only around 20% for the village wines, 35% for the Premier Crus and 50% for the Grand Crus.

If Georges Roumier only produced Chambolle-Musigny, Bonnes Mares and Clos St Denis, the winery would still be considered one of the greatest in Burgundy, but their other-worldly Musigny Grand Cru elevates their status among the great wineries of France to legendary.
