Château Montrose 2004 is a full-bodied, Cabernet Sauvignon-based red wine from the St-Estephe appellation of Bordeaux. Château Montrose is a Second Growth property situated in St-Estèphe, the northernmost of the Médoc communes. The estate’s portfolio includes three wines, which are composed largely of Cabernet Sauvignon with some Merlot. On the 2004 grand vin. "It has a foursquare but precise bouquet that unfolds in the glass to offer brambly red berry fruit, tar, undergrowth and cedar aromas. There is a touch of mint that emerges with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with tannins that gently grip. It is more savoury than other vintages. hints of bacon fat and bell pepper towards the harmonious finish that lingers nicely in the mouth." Tasted at the château, the 2004 Montrose is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot picked between 24 September and 15 October. The palate is medium-bodied with tannins that gently grip. It is more savory than other vintages. hints of bacon fat and bell pepper towards the harmonious finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. Probably earlier drinking that other vintages, yet this Montrose has personality and will give drinking pleasure for 15-20 years. Tasted September 2016. - Neal Martin

The 2004 Montrose has a slightly rustic bouquet but is quite charming. It offers mainly red fruit, bacon fat, undergrowth and peaty scents, which are very Saint-Estèphe in style. The palate is medium-bodied with melted tannins. It is savory and a little dry, especially towards the finish, though there is good weight, and it is well balanced. Perfect to drink now.

A very worthy follow-up to the famous 2003 even if the style is different – excellent winemaking here at the moment. Blackish crimson and very little nose at first. Lots of sweet fruit on the front palate, then fine tannins. Sandy, not aggressive tannins. Another very gentle, round wine but with obviously more concentration and reticence than the Dame de Montrose. Relatively advanced. Neat well-mannered – quite a statement in the context of many relatively aggressive wines. Elegant and ‘just’ 12.8% alcohol. You certainly wouldn’t come across this sort of wine anywhere but Bordeaux. Relatively light at the moment but the winemaker is convinced it will put on flesh later, like the 1996s. (JR)

Structure and Elegance

A veritable jewel of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, with a history that dates back as far as 1815, this Second Growth property spans 95 ha. The estate produces a marvellous second wine, La Dame de Montrose, as well as a third wine, now known as Tertio de Montrose.

Renowned for the ageability and polish of their wines, the vineyards of Château Montrose are planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, all farmed organically. The first wine, Château Montrose is produced as the result of rigorous selection from a predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Structured and tannic but with all the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classé.
