Montrachet often stands high above all other white Burgundy crus in terms of quality, complexity and longevity. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s holdings consist of three parcels in the Le Montrachet lieu-dit in Chassagne-Montrachet, totalling just 0.68 hectares surface area with vines that are, on average, 50 years of age. Of the eight grand cru wines that DRC makes, this has the smallest production and is, therefore, often the rarest bottling. In 2019, Antonio Galloni (Vinous Media) described the 2009 as “radiant, alluring and arrestingly beautiful”.

The 2009 Montrachet Grand Cru is laced with hints of apricot, ginger, tangerine oil, mint and spice. The warm, radiant personality of the year is very much evident, but there is just enough freshness, along with a touch of reduction, that keeps things in balance. I tasted two bottles; this note is for the better of the two. The 2009 is starting to show some signs of age. Then again, it is nearly 15 years old. What an absolute delight. This was shown at the conclusion of the 2021 vintage presentation.Antonio Galloni12th March 2024
