La Macchiole was established in 1983 by Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli. Their inaugural vintage hit the market in 1987, while the flagship wine, Paleo, made its debut in 1989. Initially, Paleo was a Bordeaux blend, but during the 1990s, La Macchiole shifted its focus towards crafting single-varietal wines. Sadly, Campolmi passed away in 2002, and since then, Merli has taken charge of the estate. Messorio, a wine made entirely from Merlot, undergoes fermentation in stainless steel and larger barrels, followed by a 20-month ageing process in barriques, of which 75% are new.

Vinous
(100% merlot; 14% alcohol) Deep red. Fresh blackberry and dark cherry aromas are complemented by fresh mint, coffee, smoke and black pepper. Dense but suave, with sweet black cherry and dark chocolate flavors nicely framed by supple tannins and brightened by harmonious acidity. Finishes fresh and focused, with lingering dark cherry and mint notes and an obvious coconut nuance. This is a slightly sweeter, less herbal and less wild style of Messorio than usual, and an excellent example of the higher-alcohol, riper style of merlot typical of the Tuscan coast.Ian d'Agata1st September 2010
