Meerlust Pinot Noir 2023 hails from the esteemed Meerlust Estate in Stellenbosch, South Africa, renowned for its rich winemaking heritage since 1756. This vintage presents a blend that reflects the estate`s unique terroir, offering earthy undertones complemented by delicate floral notes. The palate reveals a balance of dark cherry and subtle spice, with a medium body and a lingering finish.

- The 2023 Pinot Noir matured in 40% new 300-liter barrels for ten months. It has a relatively light and slightly earthy bouquet with raspberry and strawberry fruit, certainly in need of more definition and complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with a tinny opening—clean and crisp yet a bit one-dimensional overall. Still, what Burgundy can you get for thirty dollars?

Full bottle 1,301 g. 100% Pinot Noir from their Compagniesdrift block. Warm, north-facing slope on a hilltop of weathered granite. Situated on the highest part of the estate and benefits from cool nights and a prevailing sea breeze in the afternoon. Grapes were hand-picked from two parcels. Destemmed and crushed to small fermenters. Aged in new and second-fill 300-litre barrels as well as in two foudres for 10 months. RS 1.76 g/l, pH 3.5, TA 5.6 g/l.A bit tart, but the cranberry fruit has brightness and crackle. Blood orange and orange peel. Skinny, snappy tannins. (TC)
