Based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Faiveley is one of the leading wine producers in Burgundy. Founded in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley, the estate is currently run by seventh-generation Eve and Erwan Faiveley. This is their 2020 Mazis-Chambertin, the northernmost grand cru vineyard in Burgundy`s Côte de Nuits sub-region. It is an elegant, well-balanced expression, boasting intense notes of oak, spice and red fruits.

The 2020 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru does not fully deliver the complexity of its peers, though there is plenty of red and blue fruit, strawberry wine gums and lavender. There are some Brettanomyces here, a bit sauvage. But I'm still drawn to the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with an almost creamy texture, brambly red fruit with deft use of whole bunches lending a discreet pepperiness. There's a lot going on in this wine as it unfolds with time, a classy operator. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. Neal Martin30th October 2024
