Bernard Dugat-Py Mazis-Chambertin 1996 is a mature red Burgundy from the Grand Cru climat of Mazis-Chambertin in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin in the Côte de Nuits. One of the most respected winemakers in the Côte de Nuits, Bernard Dugat-Py is a 13th-generation vigneron managing 5ha of vineyards, including holdings in several Premiers Crus sites and three Grands Crus, around Gevrey-Chambertin. On the domaine`s 1996 Mazis-Chambertin. "This wine is produced from 51-56 year old vines and aged in 3 new barrels (2 Troncais, 1 Allier). It displays a black colour and amazingly expressive aromas of syrupy blackberries, Asian spices, stones, briars, rosemary, and hoisin sauce. This blockbuster is a serious and intellectual wine yet maintains a great deal of its sensual nature. Velvety black fruits, metals, and juicy cherries can be found in this sublimely delineated yet thick wine. Powerful, graceful, muscular, elegant, concentrated, perfectly-balanced, and intensely flavourful, this magnificent wine should age extraordinarily well." Wine Advocate, 1998
Deep, saturated ruby. Flamboyantly perfumed aromas leap from the glass: dark fruits, venison, smoke, minerals, earth and spicy oak. Velvety and palate-caressing but manages to maintain great flavor definition; an uncanny amalgam of power and cut. Intensely fruity and fresh, with better acidity and length than the Charmes. Finishes with completely ripe tannins and great persistence.Stephen Tanzer1st March 1998

A Respect for Tradition
Founded in the late 1980s by Pierre Dugat and now run by his son Bernard, Domaine Dugat-Py have swiftly risen to be recognised as one of the most exciting wineries in the Côte d'Or. Although Bernard produces excellent wines from the communes of Fixin and Pernand Vegelesses, Dugat-Py is primarily known for their excellent Gevrey-Chambertin, which run from Villages level all the way to Grand Cru. Vines are venerable, averaging 65 years, and all vineyard work is done in a traditional manner, including the use of a horse-drawn plough.
Dugat Py have been fully organic since 2003 and are moving towards biodynamic practices in some vineyards. Winemaking is low intervention and the wines are bottling without fining or filtration. The wines are matured in French oak barrels from renowned coopers François Frères and 100% new oak is used for the Premier Cru and Grand Cru wines.
