A true Tuscan icon. Made from Merlot, the 2008 Masseto sucks you in from first sniff. A powerhouse of endless black fruit, dried herbs and liquorice. It has so much brightness and energy it is compelling. This will surely be one of the greatest releases of Masseto.

The 2008 Masseto has never been an easy wine. When it was first released, it was so hard and unyielding. Time has helped the 2008 soften a bit. Even so, it remains a wine of contrasts, of a very obvious push and pull that seems to mirror a growing season marked by alternating periods of warm weather and far cooler conditions. Graphite, smoke, tar and licorice, along with broad tannins, give the 2008 a real feeling of masculine power, qualities that are accentuated in the magnum format. Antonio Galloni1st January 2020

Another Mediterranean vintage with a hot summer, but the harvest was later than in the 2011, and there is more balance and opulence. The aromatics are standout, with curls of woodsmoke offsetting the powerful hug of tannins and fruit. Still young, but the evolution is becoming evident, as the structure begins to soften up. You feel the opulence and the richness of the vintage and the charater of Merlot on this site. Campfire, balsamic, liquroice, cocoa beans, turmeric, and a vintage where it is so enjoyable to explore the different spices that are drawn out of Merlot in Bolgheri compared to Pomerol. 100% new oak.Jane Anson7th December 2021

Masseto

A Single Vineyard Super Tuscan

A stand-out name on the Tuscan wine scene, the wines of Masseto are produced from vines first planted in the 1980s. The estate is situated on Italy’s Tuscan Coast, on a magical hillside overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea near the small village of Bolgheri. 'Masseto' was named after the rock-hard clusters of blue clay known as ‘massi’ that form on the vineyard’s surface. Originally the brainchild of Lodovico Antinori, the Masseto estate has been owned by the prestigious Tuscan Frescobaldi family since 2005.

In the words of Estate Director, Axel Heinz, 'At Masseto, we try to do as little as possible to the wines. Our goal is simply to capture the essence of nature and take it to the highest level. This is about an amazing, very challenging, vineyard and wine made with great simplicity. We have tanks. We have barrels. We have gravity flow. And we have people who care about the wine. That’s it. That’s our philosophy.'
