Mas d`en Caçador Nin Ortiz 2014 is a single-vineyard wine from Porrera, Priorat, crafted primarily from Garnacha Peluda and Cariñena. The grapes are sourced from the centenary vineyard of Mas d`en Caçador, where full clusters undergo fermentation with natural yeasts. The wine matures in 3,200-litre French oak foudres. This vintage showcases a subtle reduction typical of full-cluster fermentation, lending complexity to its profile. The winemaking team, led by Nin Ortiz, prioritises expressing the vineyard`s terroir. Limited to 3,849 bottles, this wine captures the essence of Porrera.

The 2014 Nit de Nin was also ready for tasting. It`s approximately 60% Garnacha Peluda and 40% Cariñena from a centenary vineyard (Mas d`en Caçador) in Porrera. The full clusters fermented with natural yeasts and the wine matured in 3,200-liter French oak foudres. At this point in time, there is a slight reduction that made me think of a full-cluster fermented Cornas, a mixture of meaty and floral aromas, something that I find really attractive. The palate shows great precision, with character and elegance, ultra sleek tannins and gobsmacking balance. Since 2010, 100% full clusters are used for the fermentation, but it`s not a formula. If one year they do not like the stems, they will take them away. This is a lovely example of Porrera, showing the elegant rusticity the best wines from there are capable of. I never thought I`d like this even better than the 2013. 3,849 bottles and some large formats were filled in April 2016. - Luis Gutiérrez

Ethereal and energetic Garnatxas from Priorat

The winery was established in 2006 by winemaking couple Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz- two people in love with Priorat and biodynamic agriculture. prior to establishing the winery, Ester worked as a viticulturalist for esteemed Priorat wineries like Mas Martinet and Clos i Terrasses. She soon realised that she needed to start her own project, and so bought a 1.5ha parcel of old-vine (many over 100 years old) Garnatxa Negre, Peluda and Carinyena in Mas d’en Caçador– the famous vineyard between Porrera and Gratallops. on top of this, some of the vines are planted on altitudes of 650 metres above sea level, some of the highest in the whole region. Meanwhile, Carles Ortiz had relocated from the city of Barcelona to dedicate himself to grape-growing and purchased a 5ha plot called Finca Les Planetes. The pair met at Clos i Terrasses for whom Carles supplied grapes.

They farm using exclusively organic materials and adhering to biodynamic principles- spraying biodynamic infusions, application of own compost and much more. In the fields, ploughing is done by mules and the rest of the work - whether it is weeding or harvesting - is done by hand. Inside the cellar, the philosophy is to allow the terroir to speak for itself and produce wines of purity and lightness. Grapes are cooled after harvest and then transferred to neutral vessels like amphoras and demi-muids, where fermentation is allowed to occur with natural yeast. No aggressive cap manipulation is performed during fermentation to ensure the resulting wines are elegant and balanced.
