Founded in 1991, Marcassin (French for ‘young wild boar’) is a tiny winery located on the Sonoma Coast that focuses solely on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Having either worked or consulted for some of the region’s finest wineries (e.g. Peter Michael, Colgin and Bryant), the supremely talented owner and winemaker, Helen Turley, is considered to be one of the most influential figures in Californian wine. The 2009 exudes wonderful orchard fruits and citrus notes, following through to a beautifully full-bodied palate.

The 2012 Chardonnay Maracassin Vineyard, from the estate vineyard in Fort Ross-Seaview, is peaking today. Soft, open-knit and engaging, the 2012 caresses the palate with hints of dried apricot, chamomile, crushed flowers and almond. For my palate, the 2012 is a touch beyond where I find the most pleasure in wine. Specifically, the mid-palate has started to fade and that in turn pushes the oak forward, especially texturally, where there is some dryness on the finish. Antonio Galloni5th September 2025
