Marcassin Blue Slide Ridge Pinot Noir 2003 is a single-vineyard wine from the renowned Marcassin Estate, situated in a cool microclimate on the Sonoma Coast. The vineyard, acclaimed for its Goldridge soil featuring sandy loam over clay, optimises drainage and ripening conditions. The 2003 vintage produced lower yields, resulting in concentrated fruit expression. Winemaker Helen Turley practices native yeast fermentation and ages the wine for 15-20 months in 100% new French oak barrels. This Pinot Noir exhibits characteristics of cherry, raspberry and earthy undertones.

Deep red-ruby. Superripe, chocolatey nose shows a distinctly porty aspect. Fat and round but soft, with a high-pH mouth feel and less verve than the other Marcassin pinots tasted today. The chocolate and violet flavors are accompanied by a faint pruney quality. A hugely rich pinot that should probably be drunk soon. Finishes with slightly drying tannins.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2006
