Mambourg Gewurztraminer Marc Tempe 2020 exhibits a golden hue, hinting at its concentrated nature. On the nose, it offers an aromatic profile of lychee, rose petal, and spice, alongside hints of citrus zest. The palate reveals a slightly oily texture with flavors of tropical fruits and a distinct minerality that reflects its Alsace origin. The finish is lingering, showcasing the grape`s characteristic sweetness balanced by vibrant acidity.
This wine is crafted from Gewurztraminer grapes grown in the Mambourg vineyard, known for its clay-limestone soils that contribute to the wine`s complexity. The 2020 vintage benefits from a warm growing season, resulting in fruit that ripened thoroughly. Marc Tempe is recognized for sustainable practices and a commitment to showcasing terroir, ensuring that the essence of this distinctive Alsatian region is captured in every bottle.

The 2020 Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Mambourg opens with a clear, vibrantly fresh and aromatic bouquet of smoked dates and figs, bacon, fresh and lush lychees, cloves, orange and lemon zests and lime finesse. On the palate, this is a tight, fresh and elegant, very spicy, intense and almost dry-tasting Gewürztraminer, even though it comes in with 26.3 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is a pretty savory and lemony Mambourg with serious but fine tannins and stimulating citrus fruit bitters on the finish. The rather austere tannins are reminiscent of red wine and may never fully integrate, so you need a suitably fatty dish to trap them, although even without that, they are not aggressive but simply noticeable. The aftertaste is reminiscent of pencil shavings. This has 13% stated alcohol plus 26.3 grams per liter of residual sugar. Natural cork. Tasted in November 2024. - Stephan Reinhardt

Marc and Anne Marie Tempé told us, `This is our favourite vineyard. The vines are more than 60 years old and some are nearly 100 years old.` Clay limestone with iron oxide. The iron oxide gives bitterness. South facing. Hot, but soil stays cool. RS 3.7 g/l, TA 6.2 g/l.This has a wonderful laurel and poached pear and cardamom aromas. And like a few of the other Tempé wines, it has a distinctively aromatic `sweet green` gauziness and a liquorice undertow, both of which intensify the freshness but also seem to bring herbal, spicy currents of energy. Fennel. Tarragon. Matcha. Very unusual and very elegant, especially for an Alsace Gewurz. At the heart, it`s golden and tropical; mangoes honey and cream. And then it floats in the finish, uncommonly delicate, like silver-tip tea. (TC)
