Château Malescot Saint-Exupéry is a Third Growth wine producer that flies under the radar of many Bordeaux lovers. Owned by the Zuger family since the 1950s, the estate includes 23 hectares under vine and the best vineyards share the same deep, grave soils as their famous neighbour Château Margaux. The 2000 vintage is a dusty, earthy and smoky expression. Velvet on the palate with a remarkable long finish.
91 Vinous
- Good deep ruby-red. Explosive aromas of blackcurrant, mocha, coffee, molasses and spices. Sweet but firm, with sound acidity contributing excellent vinosity and leavening the wine's richness. Expressive flavors of raw currant, game and truffle. Thick but not overly fat, finishing with firm tannic spine and excellent persistence.
17.5 Jancis Robinson
A cut above most of these wines in quality, but also in price too usually. Very deep colour with lift and toasty oak. Very seductive blend of ripeness and a tantalising sense of much left in reserve. (JR)
