Magma Rosso Cornelissen 2017 is a red wine crafted from 100% Nerello Mascalese grapes, sourced from Frank Cornelissen`s single vineyard on the slopes of Mount Etna, located at a high altitude of approximately 900m. The indigenous, ungrafted vines were planted over 80 years ago, benefiting from volcanic soils that impart a unique mineral character. This wine showcases a complex bouquet of dark fruit, herbal notes and a subtle minerality. Frank Cornelissen is renowned for his minimal intervention techniques, allowing the true essence of the terroir to shine through.

Mixing the dry and warm personality of the vintage with its own inherent spicy and exotic profile, the 2017 Nerello Mascalese Magma lifts up with prominence. Musky crushed raspberries and cherries complemented by notes of star anise, cloves and balsam herbs create an enthralling display. It washes rich velvety waves of mineral-tinged red fruits and spices across the palate with ease, lifted by cooling acidity, as tannic tension slowly mounts toward the close. There’s plenty of structure here, but it’s nearly masked by the Magma’s sheer mass, as this seems to slowly melt away, leaving nuances of mint and tart berries in its wake. Wow. This is easily one of the most complex 2017s from Etna that I’ve tasted to date. The fruit hails from vines that are ungrafted and over 100 years old from the Barbabecchi cru located in the north valley, between 870-910 meters in elevation. After a sixty day maceration, it’s refined completely in neutral epoxy tanks. An average of only 1,500 bottles are produced each year.Eric Guido1st June 2021
