From the renowned Paulliac 5ème Cru Classé Château Lynch-Bages, here is the 2006 vintage. 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. A classic mature vintage, the nose offers an attractive interplay between deep, buttery black fruits, cedar and graphite notes, and a cool, minty Cabernet character. The wine has plenty of structure and muscular personality. Beautiful fruit, alluring purity and a nicely textured mouthfeel. A full-bodied finish with plenty of sweetness.

A touch subdued on the aromatics, still holding back even at 16 years old. As it opens it majors on earthy, rustic fruits, undergrowth, tobacco, tar, a big tannic body that is reflective of a vintage that was more complicated than the 2005, but that offered wines with frame and long ageability. As it opens, waves of liqourice root and rose petal appear. First vintage where Jean-Charles Cazes replaced his father Jean-Michel as director of the estate, and the first for Nicolas Labenne as technical director. 70% new oak.Jane Anson6th April 2022

The 2006 Lynch-Bages has an airy bouquet, open but missing the same fruit intensity as other vintages. Light wild hedgerow, bilberry and touches of seaweed emerge but never fully get into fifth gear. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rigid tannins that frame the dusky black fruit. More austere than vintages from this era, it just tapers a little towards the finish. Not bad, but missing a bit of substance and length. Tasted at the Lynch-Bages vertical at the château. Neal Martin1st July 2023

The Modern Pauillac

Situated in the celebrated Pauillac appellation in Bordeaux, Château Lynch Bages uses around 60% of its 100 hectares to produce its first wine (a 5th growth in the 1855 classification) in addition to producing a second red, Echo de Lynch Bages. These wines display superb Cabernet Sauvignon character, together with smaller percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot making up the blend. A wonderful example of the power and elegance of truly great Pauillac: gloriously supple and smooth with a tannic backbone.

A white wine, known as Blanc de Lynch Bages, is also produced in very small quantities. Made from an elegant blend of the classic white Bordeaux varietals, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle, the resulting wines display exhilarating freshness and dried apricot complexity.
