Lynch-Bages 1999 is a red wine from the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. Sourced from the deep Garonne gravels of the Bages plateau, this wine captures the quintessential muscularity of the commune in a more approachable, charming vintage. The blend is dominated by 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, which underwent fermentation in stainless steel and 15 months of ageing in 70% new oak. While it possesses the trademark cedar and cassis profile of the estate, the 1999 is noted for its supple structure and early-drinking harmony compared to the more restrained vintages of the decade.

- The 1999 Lynch-Bages has a deep core with modest aging on the rim. The nose is austere, a little introspective, as undergrowth mixes with black truffle and morels showing fine definition. There is definitely some greenness here. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins that frame the tart red fruit laced with tobacco and smoke. This attenuates a little towards the finish that displays a touch of greenness, though it fades in the glass. Tasted blind at the Lynch Bages vertical at the château.

Very deep crimson. Seductively, spicily scented. Round, with tannins well hidden. More impact of sheer fruitiness on the palate than most, but the tannins are certainly there. Still chunky overall. (JR)

The Modern Pauillac

Situated in the celebrated Pauillac appellation in Bordeaux, Château Lynch Bages uses around 60% of its 100 hectares to produce its first wine (a 5th growth in the 1855 classification) in addition to producing a second red, Echo de Lynch Bages. These wines display superb Cabernet Sauvignon character, together with smaller percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot making up the blend. A wonderful example of the power and elegance of truly great Pauillac: gloriously supple and smooth with a tannic backbone.

A white wine, known as Blanc de Lynch Bages, is also produced in very small quantities. Made from an elegant blend of the classic white Bordeaux varietals, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle, the resulting wines display exhilarating freshness and dried apricot complexity.
