Léoville Las Cases 2000 is a Cabernet Sauvignon- and Merlot-based red Bordeaux from the Saint-Julien appellation. Léoville Las Cases is a legendary `Super Second` producer whose wines often rival the First Growths. The 2000 vintage was a classic year in Bordeaux, resulting in powerful and concentrated wines with a firm structure. This jeroboam bottling uses grapes sourced primarily from the Grand Clos, a walled vineyard that borders Château Latour. It offers aromas of dark berries, pencil shavings and cedar, with nuances of liquorice and cigar box. The palate is deep and concentrated, with finely-grained tannins and a long, resonant finish.

The 2000 Léoville Las Cases is a vintage that I have encountered a dozen or so times. Jean-Hubert Délon oversaw a magnificent wine in this year. The nose of graphite-infused black fruit is still vivacious and very complex, very Pauillac-like, and supremely well focused. Hints of licorice develop with aeration. The medium-bodied palate features sappy black fruit and perfectly judged acidity. Complex and delineated, with marine-tinged mulberry and black currant notes given a deft Oriental touch on the finish. Bottles are only just beginning to drink perfectly now and will last another 30 or more years. Neal Martin1st September 2021

A First Class Second Growth

The illustrious 2ème Cru Classé property, Château Léoville Las Cases, has cemented its reputation as one of the most consistent producers of exceptional quality wines in the Saint Julien appellation in Bordeaux. Spanning 98ha, the estate produces its celebrated first wine - a Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend - in addition to a second wine from young vines, Le Petit Lion. These stellar reds are renowned for their structure and longevity and are produced from the beating heart of the estate, on deep, well-draining gravel soils.

Two further wines are made from a separate site, situated further back from the river with more sandy-gravels: Clos de Marquis and Petite Marquise. The key varietals that make up these powerful red wines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
