Château Léoville-Barton is a Second Growth wine estate in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux. This quintessential claret is produced mainly from Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller proportions of Merlot, and typically matured in 50% new oak for 18 months. This release is the 2009 vintage of its Grand Vin, a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22.5% Merlot and 0.5% Cabernet Franc. The 2009 vintage in Bordeaux is widely regarded as one of the best in recent history. The weather conditions were ideal for grape growing, with a long, hot summer and a mild autumn. The wines from this year are full-bodied and powerful, with ripe fruit flavours and good acidity. They are also well-balanced and have the potential to age for many years.

Still young and brooding, this is pure St Julien, pure Barton loveliness. Great quality, juicy, balanced, crayon and cassis, we are right in the heart of the appellation here, but with the intensity and concentration turned up to full. 60% new oak for ageing.Jane Anson10th October 2024

The 2009 Léoville-Barton is one of the few Saint-Julien '09s to suggest just a smidgen of brettanomyces on the nose, although frankly it does not detract from its allure, with lovely meat juice and brown spice aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, juicy and slightly chewier than its peers, well judged acidity with ample density and rondeur towards the finish. It might benefit from another year in bottle but otherwise, this is just a wonderful, life-affirming and disarmingly charming Léoville-Barton. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2009 Leoville Barton gives up expressive cherry cordial, warm cassis and blackberry tart scents with nuances of menthol, cigar box and fallen leaves. Medium-bodied and elegantly played with loads of freshness and soft tannins, it has a long, perfumed finish. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Classic Bordeaux Beyond Compare

Hailing from the appellation of Saint Julien in Bordeaux, Château Leoville Barton has been family-run since 1826 with the famous Anthony Barton raising the estate to ever greater heights in the second half of the 20th century and his daughter Lilian taking the reins in recent years.

A superb quality Second Growth, Château Leoville Barton is renowned for producing old-school wines that are intensely structured and often require extended cellaring before entering their prime drinking window. The estate also produces an excellent quality second wine, La Réserve de Barton, a red wine produced from young vines. Vineyard holdings cover 51 hectares - planted to 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc.
