Leoville Barton 2003 reflects the continued tradition of this historic second-growth St-Julien estate, acquired by Anthony Barton`s family in 1826. The vineyard spans approximately 47 hectares, primarily planted with 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, and 7% Cabernet Franc. The estate’s wines are produced with meticulous attention to detail at the neighbouring Langoa Barton winery, utilising temperature-controlled fermentation in wooden vats and maturing in up to 60% new French oak for around 18 months. Approximately 18,000 cases of this vintage were produced, showcasing the craftsmanship inherent to the estate`s operations.

Good medium ruby. Explosive nose of black raspberry, coffee and leather. Hugely rich, dense and sweet, with deep flavors of currant, plum and chocolate complicated by underlying minerality. Wonderfully dense and full on the back end, with broad tannins and palate-staining length. Today, the 2005 comes off as dry by comparison. A standout of the vintage, and likely to be long-lived in the context of the year.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2006

Hailing from the appellation of Saint Julien in Bordeaux, Château Leoville Barton has been family-run since 1826 with the famous Anthony Barton raising the estate to ever greater heights in the second half of the 20th century and his daughter Lilian taking the reins in recent years.

A superb quality Second Growth, Château Leoville Barton is renowned for producing old-school wines that are intensely structured and often require extended cellaring before entering their prime drinking window. The estate also produces an excellent quality second wine, La Réserve de Barton, a red wine produced from young vines. Vineyard holdings cover 51 hectares - planted to 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc.
