Champagne Leclerc Briant is an American-owned champagne producer located in Épernay and the Vallée de la Marne subregion. The house is renowned in top global restaurants for the pure and expressive nature of its wines, perfectly complementing haute cuisine. The unique Cuvée Abyss undergoes months of ageing beneath the Atlantic Ocean, a testament to Leclerc Briant`s experimental approach. This zero-dosage champagne, having undergone months of aging under the Atlantic Ocean, boldly reflects its maritime environment, with aromas and flavours that authentically capture the essence of the sea.

Crafted from equal parts Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay and aged underwater during the summer of 2022, the 2018 Abyss reveals aromas of maritime notes, white fruits, spices, smoke and herbs. Medium to full-bodied, tense and ethereal, it`s perfectly balanced with a pinpoint mousse and a lovely gastronomic bitterness. Disgorged with one gram per liter dosage. - Yohan Castaing

The 2018 Brut Nature Abyss, made from one-third each of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, was disgorged in Winter 2022 and submerged in the sea off the coast of Brittany for ten months at a depth of 60 meters, the bottle reassuringly encrusted in barnacles. A subtle touch of red plum and tender smoke carry breeziness on the nose, while the slender palate comes with fine mousse and lovely verve and spright for 2018. This is tightly meshed and beautifully plummy, uniting the best of 2018 fruit and uncommon freshness. That beautiful notion of smoky plum shines on the lasting finish. Zero dosage. - Anne Krebiehl MW

Full bottle 1,599 g. 34% Pinot Noir, 33% Pinot Meunier, 33% Chardonnay. 100% premier cru vineyards. Chardonnay from Bisseuil, Pinot Noir from Avenay-Val-d’Or, Meunier from Vrigny. The base wines were blended and bottled in July 2019, disgorged in January 2022 (dosage 1.3 g/l) and the bottled wine was then despatched to Brittany in June 2022 where it spent just over 12 months, 60 me under the sea, before being retrieved in summer 2023. 5,000 bottles produced. Certified organic (Ecocert).
I don’t think it’s power of suggestion to describe this wine as seriously salty! White-knuckle tension, white-bone austerity, white citrus carved from white stone. There is a glass-rod slenderness and piercing purity to the wine – as if you could spike a hole in the air with it. The texture seems to crackle in your mouth, like frost underfoot. You actually want to drink this wine on an icy cold, Wolf Moon night – it has that sense of bone-tingling, haunting stillness. (TC)
