Fattoria Le Pupille is a unique estate run by Elisabetta Geppetti in the medieval village of Pereta in Maremma. Credited with putting the tiny appellation of Morellino di Scansano on the fine wine map. Geppetti is also noted for having created one of Maremma’s emblematic Supertuscans, Saffredi.
The nose offers a complex blend of dark fruits, notably black cherry and plum, paired with earthy undertones, herbal nuances, and subtle spicing from oak maturation. The palate reveals a structured profile with firm tannins and balanced acidity, leading to a prolonged finish.

Elisabetta Geppetti’s 2004 Saffredi shows the sexiness and silkiness of this great Tuscan vintage. Here it is the expressive bouquet and silky tannins that stand out most. The 2004 can be enjoyed today and over the next decade or so. Saffredi is one of my favorite Maremma wines and 2004 is one of the top vintages. Antonio Galloni1st December 2013

The DNA profile of the Fattoria le Pupille 2004 Saffredi is different because this is the first vintage that sees Syrah instead of Alicante in the blend. The bouquet comes out in full force with lots of rich dark fruit and tannins that are still aggressive today, some 20 years after the harvest. The growing season saw four big summer storms and is considered a cool vintage overall. Indeed, the freshness of the fruit is intact, and there is a hint of dried green herb or rosemary. This bottle is holding on nicely. - Monica Larner
