Château Smith Haut Lafitte – which is unrelated to First Growth Château Lafite Rothschild – is one of the finest producers in Pessac-Léognan. They produce six wines from their own estate, which is spread out in a single block on the Graves Günziennes terroir. The 2019 Le Petit Haut Lafitte Blanc is a blend of 80% of Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Sémillon, aged for 12 months on the lees in oak barrels [50% new]. A medium to full-bodied wine, with a soft creamy texture and notes of pears, citrus fruit, white flowers and mineral elements. Ready to be enjoyed now.

The 2019 Le Petit Haut Lafitte Blanc has a lively bouquet that displays more mineralité than I remember from last year, very well defined and revealing apple and orange blossom scents with aeration. The balanced palate delivers fine depth and a touch of tangerine and fresh grapefruit, leading to a poised, persistent finish. Excellent. Neal Martin1st February 2022

Organic Winemaking in Pessac-Léognan

Château Smith Haut Lafitte has a long and prestigious history and, since it was acquired by the Cathiard family in 1990, has garnered a reputation as one of the finest producers in Pessac-Léognan. Certified organic since 2019, the estate produces both red and white wines, in addition to a second wine, Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte.

With an estate spanning 80ha, seven red and white grape varieties are planted, namely Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc for reds and Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris for whites. The red wines are generous and juicy, boasting wonderful ageability (and with less oak-dominance from 2010 onwards), whilst the whites offer both superb value and impeccable quality.
