Formerly known as Bahans Haut-Brion, Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is the second wine of illustrious First Growth Pessac-Léognan estate, Château Haut-Brion. Made to the same exacting standards and with similarly meticulous attention to detail as the Grand Vin, this is a marvellous entry point to the Domaine Clarence Dillon red wines. The 2017 is an elegant, fine-grained and fresh release composed of 55% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5.3% Cabernet Franc and 2.6% Petit Verdot.

A blend of 55% Merlot, 5.3% Cabernet Franc, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1.7% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is deep garnet-purple in color and starts off with youthful notions of cedar chest and crushed blackcurrants, giving way to a core of raspberry pie, kirsch, black cherry compote and unsmoked cigars with a touch of crushed rocks. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-coating red and black fruits with a firm backbone of fine-grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing on a lingering earthy note.Lisa Perrotti-Brown16th March 2020

The 2017 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is a pretty wine, but it also remains a bit lacking in both depth and overall structure. In many vintages, Clarence can be a sort of mini Haut-Brion, but the 2017 is decidedly light. Sweet floral, spice and tobacco notes open up nicely, but there is no getting past the wine's rather modest depth and compact finish.Antonio Galloni1st March 2020

Pessac Leognan's Only First Growth

Grapes are thought to have been grown on the Haut-Brion estate in Pessac-Léognan since the Roman era, while the first recorded mention of the property is in 1423. The wine has had a long, illustrious history and is famously mentioned by Samuel Pepys in his diary of 1663. Nowadays, Haut Brion is considered by many to be one of the finest wines in the world and was ranked in the First Growth category during the 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines.

Renowned for its first wine (40% of production), Haut Brion, the estate also produces a spectacular second wine from young vines, Le Clarence de Haut Brion, in addition to a white, Château Haut-Brion Blanc, the Clarendelle branded wines and a second white, La Clarté de Haut Brion (which also takes grapes from La Mission). Spanning 53 hectare, the estate is planted to 50 hectares red varieties and 3 hectares white. The reds produced are beautifully balanced and complex, often around 14% abv and made from a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, typically aged in 80% new oak. The Haut-Brion Blanc meanwhile is a Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc blend, produced in small quantities and aged in a mix of new and one-year oak.
