Laurent Bénard La Clé des Sept Arpents NV is a small-production Champagne from the Aube region, predominantly made from Pinot Noir. This particular wine reflects the unique terroir of the single-vineyard site, characterised by clay-limestone soils that contribute to the wine`s structure. It features a pale golden hue and offers aromas of ripe red berries, baked apple and hints of brioche. The palate is characterised by a balancing acidity and a firm texture, leading to a finish that reveals earthy undertones.

Disgorged in October 2024 with a dosage of 1.3 grams per liter, Bénard’s 2021-based NV La Clé des Sept Arpents, enriched by 55% reserve wines maintained as a perpetual cuvée since 2012, is a blend composed of 70% Pinot Noir, with the remainder evenly divided between Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. Sourced from three villages—Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Avenay-Val-d’Or and Mutigny—and vinified in nearly equal proportions of wood and tank, it opens with an expressive bouquet of pear, fresh citrus fruit, early-blooming white flowers and peach. Medium-bodied, vibrant and racy, it features a delicate, pillowy mid-palate and concludes with a citrus-inflected finish. While many 2021 cuvées lean toward austerity, this rendition achieves harmony and balance, thanks in large part to its generous inclusion of reserve wines. - Kristaps Karklins
