Lafleur 2000 is a Pomerol from the Bordeaux region of France, presented here in magnum format. Often considered one of the most profound wines ever produced by the estate, it is a fascinating study in the confluence of impeccable vineyard practices and an exceptional vintage. The nose is bewitching, offering notes of kirsch liqueur, liquorice, truffles and floral nuances. The palate is stacked and packed, with a multi-dimensional mid-palate of unbelievable intensity, yet all this power is allied to striking elegance and crystalline delineation. This is a backward, tour de force Bordeaux that requires decades of patience to unleash its full magic.

The 2000 Lafleur is a benchmark wine that prefigures the estate's wines in the 21st century. Though I have tasted it a dozen or so times from bottle, this was my first time in magnum…and what a wine! Showing only modest bricking at its rim, the nose is a symphony of aromas, an aromatic Pandora's Box: blackberry, wild hedgerow, black truffle, pencil box and gravel give way to more red fruit and rose petals. The palate has a heavenly balance with perfectly pitched acidity that effortlessly counterbalances the sheer weight and density of this wine. Previous examples have warned me away from cracking this open, but despite its larger format, this example is the first that entertains the notion of drinkability. That said, the 2000 is clearly a Pomerol that will span decades. The grandeur of this Lafleur is entrancing. Tasted from ex-château magnum at Kate & Kon's 40-Year vertical in Austria. Pomerol's Other Superstar

Château Lafleur has come to be recognised as one of greatest producers in Pomerol, offering wines of incredible balance, purity and elegance, with distinct mineral character. A stand out name for Bordeaux's Right Bank, the estate also produces a second red, Les Pensées de Lafleur, produced from a 0.68ha plot with its own distinct terroir - resulting in a lighter, more fragrant style compared to the Lafleur.

Despite both wines being classic blends of Cabernet Franc and Merlot with 20% new oak, the result is two quite different expressions: for example the the dominance of cigar-box and graphite Cabernet Franc complexity in the Lafleur.
