Formed in 2000, Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair is a relatively new wine producer, although the Liger-Belair family have owned vineyards in Vosne-Romanée since the 19th century. The estate produces organic and biodynamic wines from Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Flagey-Echézeaux and Vougeot. with the tiny monopole of La Romanée providing Comte Liger-Belair`s flagship wine. The 2009 vintage is a classy and polished wine, revealing notes of plums, cassis and spices, complemented by very fine tannins.

The 2009 La Romanée Grand Cru puts in a curious showing. Paler in hue, I wonder whether there is any stem addition in the wine. Indeed, the nose is lighter than expected, with red cherries, strawberries, loam and espresso. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with commendable sharpness on the entry. Lightly spiced with a little attenuation towards the finish. To be honest, I was expecting more. Tasted blind at the 2009 horizontal at Club 1243. Neal Martin1st March 2023

Firm cherry red. Haunting, rather mineral nose. Lovely purity of fruit on entry and very sweet, polished palate. Seems as though there is quite a bit of gas dissolved in this cask sample. Very polished and assured. Just a hint of coffee and cherry cough pastilles. Sinewy. It seems a bit ungracious to complain that a grand cru is too sweet but this somehow lacks complete refreshment. One is conscious of the new wood. ‘Twill be fascinating to see how it evolves and whether it becomes more serious. (JR)Jancis Robinson11th January 2011
