Founded in 1890, La Rioja Alta continues to be a leading producer of traditionally made Rioja wines. Gran Reserva 904 is only released in exceptional vintages. The 2004 vintage is produced from 90% Tempranillo from vines over 40 years old grown in the municipalities of Briñas, Labastida and Villalba, together with 10% Graciano. Intense on the nose with outstanding balsamic, vanilla, coconut, chocolate and truffle wrapped around a core of candied fruit. Well balanced on the palate with elegant acidity and fine, silky tannins concluding on a finish with hints of roasted coffee and spice.

- (90% tempranillo and 10% graciano): Bright red. Heady aromas of dried red berries, cherry, smoked meat, vanilla and potpourri, with a spicy element gaining strength with air. Fleshy and seamless in texture, offering sappy red fruit and floral pastille flavors and an undertone of sweet vanilla. The spiciness comes back on the finish, which features suave floral and cherry-vanilla qualities and sneaky tannins. This classic, old-school Rioja is delicious now but is destined for a long, graceful evolution.

From an `Excellent` vintage. 90% Tempranillo and 10% particularly successful Graciano from their own vineyards at least 40 years old in Briñas, Labastida and Villalba. Each plot is vinifed separately. Aged for four years in four-year-old American casks. Manual racking `by candlelight`(!) every six months. Barrel selection. Bottled February 2009.Mid ruby. Intense strawberry fruit with very lively well-hung game notes. Super clean and fresh. Lovely energy and directness. Tannins receding but perceptible. Lots of life ahead of this. Very gentle finish. Real lift and briskness. Not a hint of soupiness! Like a particularly bright jewel. (JR)
