Château La Mission Haut-Brion is the sister estate from Château Haut-Brion and since 1983, both properties have been under the same ownership of the Dillon family. This release is their Grand Vin from the 1992 vintage, a blend of 63% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Cabernet Franc. The wine is now fully developed, offering notes of forest floor, tobacco, liquorice, prunes and a savoury edge.

The 1992 La Mission Haut-Brion is a vintage that I have only met once, although that is no great loss. This is one-dimensional and staid on the nose, and the palate feels rather hollow and green, lacking both fruit and matière due to the higher Merlot content. Bottles should have been consumed by now. My score was probably generous! Tasted at the La Mission Haut-Brion vertical in London. Neal Martin1st September 2021

Long Lived Reds and Whites

Château La Mission Haut-Brion is one of the preeminent estates in the Pessac-Léognan appellation and is renowned for producing exceptionally concentrated and long-lived wines. The prestigious first label, La Mission Haut-Brion, is a near equal blend of Cabernet and Merlot, giving wonderfully focused wines with bramble and floral character. This illustrious estate also produces a stellar second label, La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion.

Two beautiful whites are made: La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc, which is a aromatic, Sémillon-dominant blend with beautiful citrus and stone fruit, and a second white, La Clarté de Haut Brion (which also takes grapes from the Château Haut-Brion estate).
