Château La Mission Haut-Brion is the sister estate from Château Haut-Brion and since 1983, both properties have been under the same ownership of the Dillon family. This release is from the 1985 vintage, and the wine is in a perfect drinking spot right now. Full-throttle aromatics and flavours that lead with earthen, herby fruit, nuanced with cedar, graphite and attractive savoury notes. Plenty of richness and structure to be enjoyed.

The La Mission Haut-Brion 1985 is a vintage that I have tracked over the last couple of decades. It has a mellow bouquet of red cherries, tobacco, sage and hints of dried blood and terra-cotta – quintessentially 1985 Pessac-Léognan – and reveals light leathery scents with time. The voluminous palate is one of the fleshiest that La Mission produced that decade, and the most pliant, featuring gamy red fruit. It’s just a tad diffuse toward the finish, which used to be strict and linear. Clearly à point, this is a lovely, easygoing La Mission Haut-Brion. Long Lived Reds and Whites

Château La Mission Haut-Brion is one of the preeminent estates in the Pessac-Léognan appellation and is renowned for producing exceptionally concentrated and long-lived wines. The prestigious first label, La Mission Haut-Brion, is a near equal blend of Cabernet and Merlot, giving wonderfully focused wines with bramble and floral character. This illustrious estate also produces a stellar second label, La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion.

Two beautiful whites are made: La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc, which is a aromatic, Sémillon-dominant blend with beautiful citrus and stone fruit, and a second white, La Clarté de Haut Brion (which also takes grapes from the Château Haut-Brion estate).
