Owned by the family firm Domaine Clarence Dillon, Château La Mission Haut-Brion can trace its history back to the 16th century. The prestigious estate is situated within the Pessac-Léognan appellation, a few miles southwest of Bordeaux’s city centre. This release proves that Haut-Brion can make solid wines in nearly any vintage, including the relatively adverse 1980.

With a delicate bouquet, the 1980 La Mission Haut-Brion is surprisingly aromatic, with notes of licorice, dark berries, leather, forest floor and a touch of green pepper. It’s elegant, medium-bodied, fresh and tense, with a short but spicy finish. This is one of the better 1980 red Bordeaux I have tasted recently.Yohan Castaing7th December 2023

The 1980 La Mission Haut-Brion is visibly mature in color, with a tuile core and wide bricking. The surprisingly sweet yet diffuse nose offers undergrowth and humidor scents and comes across a little musty compared to the 1981. The palate is bitter on the entry and rather leafy, leading to a sharp herbaceous finish. Despite all that, there is a scintilla of elegance. Bottles should have been drunk by now. Tasted at the La Mission Haut-Brion vertical in London. Neal Martin1st September 2021

Long Lived Reds and Whites

Château La Mission Haut-Brion is one of the preeminent estates in the Pessac-Léognan appellation and is renowned for producing exceptionally concentrated and long-lived wines. The prestigious first label, La Mission Haut-Brion, is a near equal blend of Cabernet and Merlot, giving wonderfully focused wines with bramble and floral character. This illustrious estate also produces a stellar second label, La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion.

Two beautiful whites are made: La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc, which is a aromatic, Sémillon-dominant blend with beautiful citrus and stone fruit, and a second white, La Clarté de Haut Brion (which also takes grapes from the Château Haut-Brion estate).
