Since the Frey family (also owners of Jaboulet in the Rhône Valley) assumed control of Château La Lagune in 1999, the wines produced at this Grand Cru Classé Haut-Médoc estate have seen a massive increase in quality and consistency. The 2007 release is a wonderfully drinkable red, with fine tannins and elegant, savoury character.

The 2007 La Lagune was surprisingly showing a touch of reduction on the nose. Underneath that lies a mixture of red and black fruit, sage and melted tar; with aeration it begins to lose that reduction and show decent delineation. The palate is medium-bodied and shows better balance and finer tannin than the 2006. This is nicely focused with fresh black fruit tinged with tobacco and graphite, maybe the first La Lagune since the Frey family bought the estate whereby the Cabernet Sauvignon begins to sing. No, it is not a long-term proposition but it is thoroughly enjoyable. Tasted at the La Lagune vertical at the château. Neal Martin1st April 2018
