La Gaffeliere 2009 is a medium-bodied, Merlot-based red wine from the St-Emilion appellation of Bordeaux. Located just to the west of Château Pavie, La Gaffeliere is a renowned Saint-Émilion property that has been in the hands of the Malet-Roquefort family since 1705. The estate itself traces its history back to the second century. "An absolutely spectacular effort, the 2009 is one of the all-time great La Gaffelieres produced. One would have to go back to the 2005, 1947 or 1961 to find this level of quality from this ancient, historic vineyard planted adjacent to the walls of St.-Emilion, on the Cote Pavie." Vinous
The 2009 La Gaffelière has a rather over-the-top bouquet with smudged definition. It feels as if it underwent a warmer or longer maceration than its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly viscous texture on the entry, lower acidity than many Right Banks, glossy and honeyed in texture towards the finish. Not really my style of wine, it feels cloying after a while. I much prefer the 2010 La Gaffelière that I tasted the week previously. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. - Neil Martin
