La Fleur de Gay 2009 is a full-bodied red wine from the prestigious Pomerol appellation on Bordeaux`s Right Bank. The nose reveals a blend of dark plum, earthy undertones and subtle spice, alongside hints of cedar and tobacco leaf. On the palate, the wine is structured and full-bodied, showcasing flavours of black cherry, leather and a touch of graphite, accented by herbal notes typical of the Pomerol region. The finish is persistent, marked by rounded tannins that provide a firm backbone.

As always, there is an elegance to the La Fleur de Gay, but the tell-tale flowery, raspberry jam, and blueberry pie notes jump from the glass along with hints of graphite and truffle. Deep, rich, full-bodied and textured, with sweet tannin and a stunning elegance and purity, this beauty that can be approached now or cellared for 20-25 years.

From a property now run completely by Chantal Lebreton since her brother, Dr. Alain Raynaud, sold all his interests, this wine, which boasts Michel Rolland as the consultant, comes from the very choice, 7.5-acre parcels of the larger Le Croix de Gay vineyard. The average age of the vines is 35 years and the blend is relatively simple – 100% Merlot, aged mostly in new oak. The alcohol here is just over 14.5%. - Robert M. Parker, Jr.

The 2009 Fleur de Gay has a lot of concentration on the nose: thick black cherry and blueberry scents that are generous if missing a little complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy furry tannin, very tarry in the mouth with a spearmint tinged finish. You could argue that it is rather over the top although, the acidity imparts freshness. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. Neal Martin1st March 2019
