La Dominique 2009 is a Right Bank Bordeaux blend hailing from the Saint-Émilion appellation. The vineyard`s clay and limestone soils contribute to the wine`s firm structure, showcasing a blend primarily composed of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. Aromas of dark fruits and spice intermingle with hints of earthiness. The excellent 2009 Bordeaux vintage allowed for optimal ripeness, resulting in a concentrated and structured wine with excellent ageing potential.

Finally we have returned to the great La Dominiques made in 1989 and 1990. This has much of the style of the 1990, with supple tannin and loads of spicy fruitcake, licorice, cassis and kirsch-like notes that jump from this dense ruby/purple wine. Fat, fleshy and full-bodied, with beautiful richness, purity and length, this wine will be approachable in its youth yet last for two decades . - Robert M. Parker, Jr.

These were the years where I struggled with the over-concentration in La Dominique, and tasting it at 15 years old underlines the progress that has been made at this property by the recent team. Exuberant in style, with grilled blueberries, fig and raspberries, sandalwood and incense. 50% new oak for ageing. The 2009 La Dominique is missing freshness and a sense of energy on the nose, just like the previous two vintages. Strangely, I would never guess this as a 2009 just by the lack of exuberance and joie-de-vivre. The palate is medium-bodied and thankfully shows better than the aromatics. There is good weight in the mouth and a fine bead of acidity, slightly savoury in style with allspice and white pepper towards the finish. 17.5 Jancis Robinson
Even darker crimson than most. Interesting, quite subtle nose. Then great sweetness on the palate and considerable dryness on the finish. A quite extreme wine that is absolutely on the edge for me as to whether it will all settle down or not. I hereby give it the benefit of the doubt as obviously the makers have taken real risks on ripeness. Some mineral savour. Muscular chewiness. Pretty glamorous and certainly extreme. (JR)
