Made to the same rigorous standards as the First Wine, from grapes grown in the same vineyard, La Dame de Montrose is the estate’s second label. Pronounced red fruit aromas and flavours dominate. The 2009 vintage is 82% Merlot and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon. The nose offers scents of blackcurrant, violets, and red cherries. Floral notes, ripe red berries and cocoa define the elegant palate. The wine is harmoniously balanced, long and powerful.
90 Vinous
The 2009 La Dame de Montrose is broody and backward on the nose, just a touch of reduction that soon blows off, yet the predominantly black fruit remains tight, fleeting hints of bayleaf and black tea surfacing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, quite compact in style but rather linear and missing some complexity/personality towards the finish. Maybe this has something up its sleeve? We will no doubt find out. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. Neal Martin1st March 2019

Structure and Elegance

A veritable jewel of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, with a history that dates back as far as 1815, this Second Growth property spans 95 ha. The estate produces a marvellous second wine, La Dame de Montrose, as well as a third wine, now known as Tertio de Montrose.

Renowned for the ageability and polish of their wines, the vineyards of Château Montrose are planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, all farmed organically. The first wine, Château Montrose is produced as the result of rigorous selection from a predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Structured and tannic but with all the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classé.
