Hailing from the Pomerol appellation of Bordeaux, Château La Conseillante has been managed by the Nicolas family since 1871. The 2009 release is a blend of 81% Merlot and 19% Cabernet Franc. Offering up a bouquet of black fruit, violet, liquorice and fresh almond carrying through to a palate characterised by silky tannins.

The 2009 La Conseillante has a very classy and sophisticated bouquet with beautifully defined black and red fruit mixed with black truffle and pressed rose petals. The oak is just completely subsumed here. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe and saturated tannin, a fine line of acidity, fresh and tensile with a sense of mineralité on the finish. This bottle shows even better than the one poured at the property 12 months earlier. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting.

Picked 19-28 Sep. Very dark. Though no darker than the Duo. Not much nose – less expressive than the Duo! Very rich and intense. Super-ripe. Taken to an extreme of ripeness? A bit overripe. Lacks acidity. I think I prefer the Duo. Heavy with a bit of tarriness on the finish. I’d love to taste this again but on this showing I fear there is not enough acid and too obvious tannin. When I subsequently tasted this blind, I wrote `Sweet and almost Argentine on the nose! None of Bordeaux’s subtlety here. I can’t really see the point. And awfully drying on the finish.` (JR)

First Class Pomerol

Situated on the eastern flank of the Pomerol commune, La Conseillante has a long history dating back the early 1700s. The team farms around 13 hectares of vineyards, comprising 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Malbec. All grapes are hand harvested, and fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats with a keen eye on temperature control to preserve fruit character. Following fermentation, the wines are aged in 90% new oak for around 18 months before being bottled without filtration.

The vineyards of La Conseillante share borders with those of L'Evangile, Petit-Village, Vieux Château Certan and Cheval Blanc - illustrious neighbours indeed. Since the 2000 vintage, the wines have been characterised by a fullness and concentration that easily allows for extended cellaring and offers a hedonistic treat in youth.
