The Champagne region experienced a very good vintage in 1979, resulting in wines marked by impressive balance and longevity. And this Krug is no exception. The nose reveals roasted chestnuts, brioche, caramel and crème Chantilly, followed by stone fruits and some floral scents. The palate unfolds in layers of preserved lemons, ripe apples and more stone fruits. Plenty of acidity and minerality lead to a seemingly endless finish.

Nineteen seventy-nine is one of the all-time great vintages for Krug. Among other things, it marks the first release of Krug’s Clos du Mesnil. The 1979 Vintage, tasted from magnum, is utterly magnificent and nearly as thrilling as the Mesnil. Miraculously fresh for a wine of its age, the 1979 pulses with remarkable energy and tension, with the Chardonnay coming through nicely in the wine’s overall brightness. Lemon oil, white flowers, almonds, crushed rocks and dried herbs are some of the signatures. Krug’s 1979 is testament to the towering stature of this iconic Champagne vintage. To be sure, the magnum format helps, but I have had bottles of the 1979 that are every bit as moving.Antonio Galloni1st November 2015

Elegant Luxury

A Champagne house that needs no introduction. Founded by Johann Krug in Reims in 1843, this celebrated Maison specialises in prestige cuvées, including the multi-vintage flagship Grande Cuvée as well as the glorious Krug Clos d'Ambonnay, made exclusively from Pinot Noir. Another highlight is the highly coveted Clos du Mesnil - a rare Blanc de Blancs produced only in exceptional years from a single, tiny 1.84ha plot of Chardonnay grapes in the heart of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Krug has been owned by LVMH since 1999.

While Krug's excellent Grande Cuvée and Rosé have historically been released as multi-vintage blends with no indication of year, the team have now started including edition numbers so consumers can easily discover the age and provenance of the base wines used in the blend.
