Krug was originally established in 1843 by German-born Joseph Krug, who cut his teeth working for Jacquesson Champagne before setting up his own Maison. All their cuvées age for at least six years on their lees before release, making them distinctively rich and complex. Krug Collection 1989 is a blend composed of 47% Pinot Noir, 29% Chardonnay and 24% Meunier, sourced from 25 crus. A beautifully aged champagne, revealing notes of pears, green apples, citrus fruits, marmalade, fresh figs and a touch of earth.

The 1989 Krug Collection is a wine with an uneven track record. This bottle is one of the finer examples I have had. Fully mature flavors of hazelnut, tobacco, smoke, licorice and dried fruits all make an appearance, while some of the more mushroomy elements found in some bottles are, thankfully, missing. At its best, the 1989 is a delicious Champagne, but it is not built for too much more aging from here on out.Antonio Galloni1st December 2016

ID 212017. Disgorged March 2012. Second release. 47% Pinot Noir, 29% Chardonnay, 24% Pinot Meunier from 25 villages. Summer 1989 was very warm. Krug 1989 is part of the first trilogy of Krug vintage releases in the history of the house. Original order of release was 1989, 1988 and 1990. Today Krug’s only other trilogy is 2003, 2002 and 2004, released in that order.Tasted blind. Pale tawny. Masses of evolution and depth. Bruised apples and some tarte-Tatin juice on the nose. Rich on the palate. Really broad and majestic with relatively low acid. This was a bit soft and was disgorged some time ago. It was in the comforting rather than energising spectrum. Elegant Luxury

A Champagne house that needs no introduction. Founded by Johann Krug in Reims in 1843, this celebrated Maison specialises in prestige cuvées, including the multi-vintage flagship Grande Cuvée as well as the glorious Krug Clos d'Ambonnay, made exclusively from Pinot Noir. Another highlight is the highly coveted Clos du Mesnil - a rare Blanc de Blancs produced only in exceptional years from a single, tiny 1.84ha plot of Chardonnay grapes in the heart of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Krug has been owned by LVMH since 1999.

While Krug's excellent Grande Cuvée and Rosé have historically been released as multi-vintage blends with no indication of year, the team have now started including edition numbers so consumers can easily discover the age and provenance of the base wines used in the blend.
