The 2009 from Margaux 3ème Grand Cru Classé property, Château Kirwan, is a broad and muscular wine composed of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 13.5% Cabernet Franc and 13.5% Petit Verdot. Now just about entering into its drinking window, it offers up classical notes of crème de cassis, blackberry, truffle, wild flowers and graphite. If consuming soon, then decanting is recommended.

The 2009 Kirwan showed extremely well, mocking my previous lukewarm reaction. It has an attractive cedar and graphite infused bouquet, plenty of black fruit with touches of wild mint developing with aeration. This coalesces nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine thread of acidity, gentle grip with hints of black pepper and cedar towards the nicely framed and persistent finish. Classy. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. Neal Martin1st March 2019
