Founded in 1973 and family-owned ever since, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is one of the most iconic and acclaimed California estates. Insignia is their flagship wine and is now recognised as one of the greatest Bordeaux blends in the region. The 2015 is a remarkable release composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec. It is explosive, vibrant and incredibly long, with exceptional layers of deeply concentrated fruit, crushed rock minerality and tapenade-like savouriness. An absolute beauty that will drink beautifully for 30+ years.

The 2015 Insignia is rich and sumptuous from start to finish. Crème de cassis, Chambord, cloves, lavender, espresso and sweet French oak stain the palate. This is a heady, unabashedly flamboyant, opulent wine. All things considered, the 2015 has aged well. Time has also softened some of the harder edges the wine showed in its youth. This is a very fine bottle. Antonio Galloni6th November 2025

Innovation and Quality in Napa

Founded in 1973, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is family-owned winery celebrated for its commitment to crafting world-class, estate grown wines from Napa Valley and the Sonoma Coast. Joe Phelps was a building contractor from Colorado who began investing in Napa Valley vineyards in the early 1970s, producing the first vintage of his now-famous "Insignia" in 1974 - one of the first super premium Bordeaux blends from Napa.

The current winemaker is Ashley Hepworth, who initially joined Joseph Phelps in 1999 as an intern. Alongside Insignia, Ashley and the team also make a number of varietal wines with the Freestone Vineyards Chardonnay being a notable high point.
