Founded in 1973 and family-owned ever since, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is one of the most iconic and acclaimed California estates. Insignia is their flagship wine and is now recognised as one of the greatest Bordeaux blends in the region. 2013 was a superb vintage and this is an incredibly concentrated and full-bodied blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot with small amounts of Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Perhaps more robustly structured than other vintages, this will possibly benefit from a few more years cellaring but should evolve beautifully over the next 40+ years.

The 2013 Insignia has arrived at its first plateau of maturity. There's a good bit of tannin left, while the aromatics show a bit more in the way of development. Inky red/purplish fruit, lavender and spice linger. The question here is whether the tannins will ever soften. This is a bit of a question mark at this stage.Antonio Galloni9th May 2024

Innovation and Quality in Napa

Founded in 1973, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is family-owned winery celebrated for its commitment to crafting world-class, estate grown wines from Napa Valley and the Sonoma Coast. Joe Phelps was a building contractor from Colorado who began investing in Napa Valley vineyards in the early 1970s, producing the first vintage of his now-famous "Insignia" in 1974 - one of the first super premium Bordeaux blends from Napa.

The current winemaker is Ashley Hepworth, who initially joined Joseph Phelps in 1999 as an intern. Alongside Insignia, Ashley and the team also make a number of varietal wines with the Freestone Vineyards Chardonnay being a notable high point.
