Joseph Phelps Insignia 2010 presents an intricate bouquet featuring notes of dark fruits, crushed blackberries and hints of cedar. The palate reveals layers of cassis and plums, accompanied by earthy undertones and a touch of vanilla from oak ageing. This full-bodied wine displays a balanced structure with fine-grained tannins, providing a distinct mouthfeel. The finish showcases a notable integration of acidity and fruit. Joseph Phelps Vineyards, established in 1973 in Napa Valley, is recognised for pioneering the Meritage style in California. This wine has potential for extended cellaring, evolving over the next two decades.

Saturated medium ruby to the rim. Musky aromas of currant, tobacco, licorice, dark chocolate, graphite and herbs; an essence of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Utterly plush and thick yet bright on entry, then superconcentrated and seamless in the middle palate, with captivating sweetness leavened by graphite minerality. Really incredible silky grain and palate-staining, gripping length here, with the serious but utterly smooth, perfectly buffered broad tannins extending the fruit. Offers great thickness and density without excess weight, not to mention superb balance and class. A great vintage for Insignia, and destined for a long life in bottle.. Very long, gripping finish. This has opened since I last tasted it in 2016 and is a spectacular drink today. If anything, its outstanding definition and structure became even more apparent with 72 hours in the recorked bottle.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2020

Innovation and Quality in Napa

Founded in 1973, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is family-owned winery celebrated for its commitment to crafting world-class, estate grown wines from Napa Valley and the Sonoma Coast. Joe Phelps was a building contractor from Colorado who began investing in Napa Valley vineyards in the early 1970s, producing the first vintage of his now-famous "Insignia" in 1974 - one of the first super premium Bordeaux blends from Napa.

The current winemaker is Ashley Hepworth, who initially joined Joseph Phelps in 1999 as an intern. Alongside Insignia, Ashley and the team also make a number of varietal wines with the Freestone Vineyards Chardonnay being a notable high point.
