Founded in 1973 and family-owned ever since, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is one of the most iconic and acclaimed California estates. Insignia is their flagship wine and is now recognised as one of the greatest Bordeaux blends in the region. The 1999 is a delicious blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Merlot with lesser parts Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Now nearing peak maturity, it is sweet and open-knit with notes of roasted black fruits, liquorice, cedar and spice.

Deep bright ruby. Captivating nose combines blackcurrant, crushed-rock minerality, licorice and violet, complemented by notes of cocoa powder, leather and earth. Densely packed and seriously concentrated, showing an almost chocolatey ripeness that's leavened by integrated acidity. Flavors of dark berries, minerals and flowers saturate the palate and spread out on the very suave, subtly long aftertaste. There's no easy sweetness here but the wine's noble tannins and considerable finesse give it great appeal today. This beautiful blend should go on for many more years on its extract and balance.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2019

Innovation and Quality in Napa

Founded in 1973, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is family-owned winery celebrated for its commitment to crafting world-class, estate grown wines from Napa Valley and the Sonoma Coast. Joe Phelps was a building contractor from Colorado who began investing in Napa Valley vineyards in the early 1970s, producing the first vintage of his now-famous "Insignia" in 1974 - one of the first super premium Bordeaux blends from Napa.

The current winemaker is Ashley Hepworth, who initially joined Joseph Phelps in 1999 as an intern. Alongside Insignia, Ashley and the team also make a number of varietal wines with the Freestone Vineyards Chardonnay being a notable high point.
