Joseph Phelps Insignia 1998 presents a deep ruby hue, characteristic of its age. The nose offers a blend of cassis, blackberry and subtle hints of fresh herbs, alongside a touch of earthiness. On the palate, it reveals structured tannins with concentrated dark fruit flavours, balanced by a trace of oak influence. The finish is marked by a lingering depth. Joseph Phelps, founded in 1973, is recognised for crafting wines that reflect the terroir nuances of Napa Valley.
91 Vinous
(14% alcohol; includes a relatively high 22% Merlot, mostly from Stag's Leap): Good dark red. Complex scents of redcurrant, plum, dusty herbs and spicebox, plus a note of fennel and a suggestion of salami meatiness. Nicely sweet but tightly wound, even a bit clenched on the back end, with a licorice element providing lift. A distinct minty note serves to brighten the middle palate without overshadowing the wine's plum, spice and cedar flavors. This wine showed a slight canned-vegetable aspect early on but no longer. Innovation and Quality in Napa

Founded in 1973, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is family-owned winery celebrated for its commitment to crafting world-class, estate grown wines from Napa Valley and the Sonoma Coast. Joe Phelps was a building contractor from Colorado who began investing in Napa Valley vineyards in the early 1970s, producing the first vintage of his now-famous "Insignia" in 1974 - one of the first super premium Bordeaux blends from Napa.

The current winemaker is Ashley Hepworth, who initially joined Joseph Phelps in 1999 as an intern. Alongside Insignia, Ashley and the team also make a number of varietal wines with the Freestone Vineyards Chardonnay being a notable high point.
