Joseph Phelps Insignia 1997 is a notable Napa Valley Bordeaux-style blend. The composition features 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, sourced from both estate vineyards and long-term partner growers. The estate vineyards, including Las Rocas and Banca Dorada, contribute 60% of the grapes, while the remainder comes from selected sites throughout Napa Valley.

Vinous
Full ruby. Supersweet aromas of blackberry, cassis, bitter chocolate, espresso and tobacco. Thick and seamless yet bright and sharply defined. Very long and spicy on the aftertaste, with excellent grip. Sweet tannins coat the teeth. Williams says the selection for Insignia is based on quality and concentration rather than on a particular flavor profile.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2000

Innovation and Quality in Napa
Founded in 1973, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is family-owned winery celebrated for its commitment to crafting world-class, estate grown wines from Napa Valley and the Sonoma Coast. Joe Phelps was a building contractor from Colorado who began investing in Napa Valley vineyards in the early 1970s, producing the first vintage of his now-famous "Insignia" in 1974 - one of the first super premium Bordeaux blends from Napa.
The current winemaker is Ashley Hepworth, who initially joined Joseph Phelps in 1999 as an intern. Alongside Insignia, Ashley and the team also make a number of varietal wines with the Freestone Vineyards Chardonnay being a notable high point.
