Founded in 1973 and family-owned ever since, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is one of the most iconic and acclaimed California estates. Insignia is their flagship wine and is now recognised as one of the greatest Bordeaux blends in the region. The 1993 is a medium-bodied blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Merlot with delicious notes of mature red fruits, Asian spices, liquorice and forest floor.

Although much lighter than the two top vintages of 1991 and 1992, it is a medium-bodied, soft, fully mature red exhibiting notes of Asian spices, licorice, red and black currants, and forest floor, and sweet tannin in the finish. While not likely to improve, it is capable of holding for another 5-10 years.

This was a complicated year weather-wise, with rain during the flowering, which lowered the crop size, and an unusual and irregular growing season with serious heat spikes in both August and September. Careful monitoring and selective harvesting was required. The 1993 Insignia (a 5,480-case blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Merlot; 13.5% alcohol) was the first vintage to be aged 26 months in 100% new French oak. — Robert Parker, 30th November 2013

Innovation and Quality in Napa

Founded in 1973, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is family-owned winery celebrated for its commitment to crafting world-class, estate grown wines from Napa Valley and the Sonoma Coast. Joe Phelps was a building contractor from Colorado who began investing in Napa Valley vineyards in the early 1970s, producing the first vintage of his now-famous "Insignia" in 1974 - one of the first super premium Bordeaux blends from Napa.

The current winemaker is Ashley Hepworth, who initially joined Joseph Phelps in 1999 as an intern. Alongside Insignia, Ashley and the team also make a number of varietal wines with the Freestone Vineyards Chardonnay being a notable high point.
