Insignia is the flagship wine of Joseph Phelps. This is the first vintage that estate-grown grapes from new plantings in Las Rocas and the new plantings in Banca Dorada on the Rutherford Bench were blended together. The wine has deep berry and blackcurrant aromas and flavours, soft tannins, and a long, lush finish.

Medium red. Sexy, mellow aromas and flavors of plum, tobacco, spices and underbrush are accented by a touch of green bean. Slightly tart acidity is keeping the wine alive but thins out the middle palate. The pH here was 3.51, vs. about 3.7 in recent years. Now we acidulate much less, said winemaker Ashley Hepworth. Plus, there was a shift in style toward later picking and warmer fermentations after 1990, and to a higher percentage of new oak as of 1993. Incidentally, this was the first vintage to be bottled with today's brown label.Stephen Tanzer1st April 2016

Innovation and Quality in Napa

Founded in 1973, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is family-owned winery celebrated for its commitment to crafting world-class, estate grown wines from Napa Valley and the Sonoma Coast. Joe Phelps was a building contractor from Colorado who began investing in Napa Valley vineyards in the early 1970s, producing the first vintage of his now-famous "Insignia" in 1974 - one of the first super premium Bordeaux blends from Napa.

The current winemaker is Ashley Hepworth, who initially joined Joseph Phelps in 1999 as an intern. Alongside Insignia, Ashley and the team also make a number of varietal wines with the Freestone Vineyards Chardonnay being a notable high point.
